Aims of the German TV-Platform
Electronic media are going through a phase of radical change. Structures that remained unchanged for decades break open, previously autonomous fields are getting cross-linked, and new players enter the competition. All parties concerned need to adjust their business models or have to find new ones. This leads to far-reaching changes in technical and economic structures.
Digitisation of communication services and media, especially in broadcasting, as well as in entertainment electronics and transmission technologies lead to convergence. This opens up a broad field for new contents and applications. Hybrid networks and consumer electronics devices are being developed. These enable broadcast and broadband applications to be used at the same time. A new, large and dynamic market thus emerges for manufacturers of devices.
Recognising the fact that these new convergence processes can only be solved in an interdisciplinary manner, the German HDTV-Platform - the precursor organisation of the German TV-Platform- was founded in 1990. Its name has changed and its aims have developed, but it is still the only institution in Germany which has such a vast and interdisciplinary membership and which is solely supported by the industry. The Deutsche TV-Plattform offers an interdisciplinary forum for cross-sectoral exchange of information and opinions among involved parties from different fields. It also co-ordinates and reconciles the different interests of all stakeholders. In addition, the TV-Plattform aims to inform consumers and the public about features and advantages of digitised media, new products and services in a company-independent and technology-neutral way.
The current topics for the work of the German TV-Platform arise from the development of techniques, technologies and markets. These topics are monitored, reviewed and developed by the bi- annual General Assembly and the Board of Directors. The Deutsche TV-Plattform therefore wishes to attract new members from companies, institutions, and organisations concerned with the convergence process. in order to involve all stakeholders in the process of co-ordination and decision making. This applies especially to content providers, end device manufacturers and service providers of new technologies.
